FAQs - For Academic Institutions

Please select one of the following topics:

Access

What information does a purchaser need to be able to supply in order to set up an account?

  • IP addresses or HTTP Referrer URL(s)
  • Institution name
  • Institution logo URL (note that we cannot upload your logo and can only reference one already appearing online)
  • OpenURL Server information (if applicable)

Is access controlled by a password or it is automatic?
Access is controlled by an HTTP referrer link placed on secure intranet which allows off site access as long as the secure intranet is accessible remotely.

Can the RMMO be accessed remotely by staff?
Account set up allows IP addresses or HTTP Referrer URL(s) to be declared. The link to RMMO should be placed on declared pages so clicking on them will let users into RMMO without the need for further authentication. As long as these IP addresses or URLs are accessible remotely (and secure) staff and students will be able to remotely access those pages, click on RMMO link and they will be taken to RMMO remotely.

Does the RMMO work on all web browsers just like any other website?
We produce standards compliant and accessible websites. A balance between technologies in current use, older technologies and future developments must be made to achieve this compliance.

Our target platform is Online Explorer 7 running on Windows XP or Vista. We also fully support:
Mozilla Firefox 2.0, Windows XP
Online Explorer 6, Windows XP
Safari 2.x, Macintosh
Opera browser 9, Windows XP

Are there a maximum number of concurrent users allowed?
We do not impose a limit on the number of users who can access the site at one time.

Will the RMMO be Athens compliant?
RMMO is compliant and Athens authentication is available.

Is the site accessibility compliant?
The RMMO is accessible and usable by a wide community. It works and displays satisfactorily on all major and common browsers within our target market. To this end, the site is fully compliant with levels 1 and 2 of the W3C accessibility guidelines (http://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG10/), and the site design is also informed by section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act (USA) and other relevant accessibility laws.

Site Access

Royal Marsden Manual Online supports three authentication methods IP Recognition, Athens Identification and Referrer URL (sometimes also called HTTP Referrer). All access methods are equally valid and there is no benefit of having one over another. We offer three access methods to ensure that we always have at least one suitable option for any Department or Faculty wishing to purchase Royal Marsden Manual Online.

IP Recognition
IP range recognition technology allows seamless authentication from within the area of the recognised IP range in an institution. Users do not have to follow any special log-in instructions, remember any usernames or passwords or have to be logged into their intranet in order to access the Royal Marsden Manual Online. Because the log-in is seamless this means that users can set up bookmarks e.g. to their favourite procedures through their browser without the need to log-in beforehand.
By giving Wiley Blackwell the IP ranges of your Department or Faculty you will not be compromising your security settings. Wiley Blackwell will not be able to access your Department or Faculty’s secure network and will not communicate the IP Range to any third parties. (Example: IP 192.999.0.0/26)

Athens User Access
To set up the Athens User access you (the person responsible for your Department or Faculty’s web-services) will have to provide us with the institutional Athens ID or IDs for each of your Departments or Faculties.. To log-in, members of your Department or Faculty will have to first navigate to the Royal Marsden Manual Online (www.rmmonline.co.uk) and then complete the Athens authentication box on the right hand side of the screen. Also refer to http://www.athensams.net/libraries/faq.aspx for more Athens FAQ’s

Referring URL Access
To set up the Referring URL access you (the person responsible for your Department or Faculty’s web-services) will have to provide us with an address of a web page from a secure web site where access information is given only to the members of your Department or Faculty (an intranet page for example). You will need to place a link to the Royal Marsden Manual Online (www.rmmonline.co.uk) on that page. To log-in, members of your Department or Faculty will have to first navigate to that secure web page and then click on the link to Royal Marsden Manual Online (www.rmmonline.co.uk). At that point Royal Marsden Manual Online will recognise that the user is coming from a referring web address or referring URL and the user will be let into the site. Users will not need to remember any Royal Marsden Manual Online usernames and passwords in order to get into the site but every time they access Royal Marsden Manual Online they will first have to navigate to the link on the referring (secure) web page.

By giving Wiley Blackwell the web address of your secure web page you will not be compromising your Department or Faculty’s security settings. Wiley-Blackwell will not be able to access your Department or Faculty’s secure network and will not communicate the URL of that web page to any third parties. (Example: http://www.intranet.university.uk/index.htm)

What should you do if you still can not access the RMMO site or have technical difficulties which your web administrator or our FAQ’s have not satisfactorily answered?

Why is my Athens ID not recognised?
Your Department or faculty needs to hold a subscription. Please confirm this with your web services manager. If you have a subscription and still have trouble accessing Royal Marsden Manual Online via the Athens ID link on http://www.rmmonline.co.uk then contact Athens at in the first instance at http://www.athensams.net/libraries/faq.aspx.
